Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina today called upon her party men to prepare lists of poor people so that her government can help them to have a better life.

“We will make houses for them,” the premier said while addressing the 20th National Council of Bangladesh Awami League at Suhrawardy Udyan of Dhaka.

“It is my call to those, who are elected representatives -- from members of parliament to the ward levels -- and all leaders and activists of our party and its affiliated organisations, that we want to make Bangladesh free of poverty,” the prime minister said at the political gathering.

The government will construct houses for them for free because “it is our duty and they are our citizens,” she said reminding her party men that Awami League is the organisation for the people and it is the party’s duty to work for the do good for the people.    

“If we can do this properly, I believe that there would be no poverty in Bangladesh.”

During the AL tenure, poverty was reduced to 22.4 percentage points from 97 percentage points, she said.

Expressing her gratitude to her party men, Hasina said the grass-roots level leaders and activists have taken the party ahead through their relentless self-sacrifice.
