Shibir leader, 12 others acquitted in 20-yr old murder case
A Chittagong court today acquitted Nasir Uddin, a top Islami Chhatra Shibir leader, and 12 others in a case filed 20 years ago for killing Jamir Uddin, a polytechnic student, in the port city.
Judge Reza Tareque Ahmed of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict this afternoon.
"They were acquitted as the charges against them were not proven," said Public Prosecutor Ayub Khan.
Nasir is still in prison as he is accused in 36 other cases filed on different charges including murder. Nineteen of them are under trial, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
On November 20, 1994, alleged armed goons of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, carried out an attack on Jamir, general secretary of the institute's student council and also a Chhatra Dal leader, to establish supremacy on the campus. The attack left Jamir shot dead.
Jamir's brother Aziz Uddin later filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station.
On February 19, 1995, police submitted the charge sheet accusing 15 people including Nasir.
The charge of the case was framed on August 23, 2000 and the case was transferred to Speedy Trial Tribunal on August 25, 2003.
After the trial began, the High Court gave stay order on trial proceedings on April 15, 2004.
On August 26 in 2014, the trial proceedings resumed after the stay order was withdrawn, said court sources.
