A Dhaka court today placed actor Niamot Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Zaher Alvi, on a two-day remand in a case filed over the death of his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Alberuni Mir passed the order after the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced Alvi before the court and sought a 10-day remand, a court employee said.

Alvi had surrendered before the court on June 18 and sought bail. However, the court rejected his petition and sent him to jail.

Ikra's father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed the case with Pallabi Police Station on March 1 against Alvi, 35, and his mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, 55, accusing them of abetment to suicide.

According to the case statement, family disputes and various forms of abuse had driven Ikra to take her own life.

Family members found the 33-year-old social media influencer's body in the couple's flat in Mirpur DOHS on February 28 and rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Nasrin Sultana surrendered before the court on June 4 and secured bail in the case.

Alvi was abroad when his wife died. His lawyers moved the High Court seeking protection from arrest or harassment upon his return to Bangladesh.

The court ruled in his favour, and Alvi returned to the country on June 5 following the order.
