Man beaten to death on theft suspicion in Pabna

No previous record of theft cases against victim found immediately, say police

A young man was beaten to death by locals on suspicion of being a thief in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna early today.

The victim, identified as Sagor Sheikh alias Masud Rana, 25, of Hasampur village in the same upazila, worked as a rickshaw-van puller and carpenter, police said.

Quoting locals, Md Khoim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sujanagar Police Station, said Rana was suspected of being a cattle thief when he was seen roaming near a house in Tantiband area around dawn. Locals chased him and caught him near Tantiband rail station, where he was beaten to death around 5:00am.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The OC said no previous record of theft cases against Rana was found immediately.

Police are investigating the incident, and preparations are underway to file a case, the OC added.
