Their son, Mostakin Alam Sumon, 35, allegedly carried out the attack and fled the scene, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station.
According to police and locals, Sumon had been struggling with drug addiction, and his parents had sent him to rehabilitation centres several times. However, he repeatedly escaped and returned home.
A team from a rehabilitation centre in Sirajganj arrived at the house early today to take him to the facility. When Sumon realised what was happening, he allegedly took a knife from the house and stabbed his mother in the chest. He then stabbed his father repeatedly in the abdomen when the latter tried to protect his wife.
