AL leader dismissed over factional clash in Ctg's Mirsharai
An Awami League committee in Jorarganj union under Chattogram's Mirsharai upazila today dismissed Mainuddin Titu from his post following a factional clash in the upazila yesterday.
Titu was the joint general secretary of the union unit AL.
"The Jorarganj union committee of AL dismissed Titu from his post as well as the party for his involvement in Sunday's attack," said Jahangir Kabir, president of Mirsharai upazila unit AL.
"A copy of the order has been sent to the upazila unit committee by the union committee," he told The Daily Star.
Jahangir Kabir also said the incident not only hampered the festive mood of the Bijoy Mela in the upazila but also tarnished the image of the party.
"The dismissal order against Titu came after grassroots activists demanded action against him for his involvement in Sunday's attack," said Jahangir.
At least 11 activists of Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League were injured in the factional clash between two groups of the ruling Awami League at the Bijoy Mela in the upazila early on Sunday. Seven of them suffered bullet wounds.
Police are yet to detain anyone in this connection and no case was lodged in this regard.
Locals and police said the Mirsharai unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad, a platform of freedom fighters, held a 10-day Bijoy Mela at Jorarganj High School ground marking the month of victory.
The fair began on December 22 and ended on Saturday night.
Rezaul Karim, Jorarganj union parishad chairman and the union unit AL general secretary, was one of the key organisers of the fair.
Quoting locals, police said around 4:30am, a few hours after the fair ended, supporters of Rezaul clashed with those of Mainuddin Titu, joint secretary of the union unit AL.
