CU students protest higher viva marks in govt job recruitment

Students of Chittagong University (CU) staged a human chain today protesting the decision to increase the marks allocated for viva voce examinations in the recruitment of employees for grades 11 to 20 in government jobs.

The human chain was held at the university’s Shaheed Minar at 12:30pm.

Speakers at the programme said increasing the marks for viva voce exams could create scope for irregularities, corruption and political influence in the recruitment process.

Jannatul Adnan, joint office secretary of Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu), said, “Keeping more marks for the viva creates scope for political identity and local influence to play a role in recruitment. This could lead to discrimination and corruption. The system must be scrapped.”

Cucsu Vice-President Ibrahim Rony said, “The recruitment process under the Hasina government was reformed by the interim government. Now, increasing the marks for viva is again creating an opportunity to appoint people based on political affiliation. We demand recruitment based on merit.”
