Troman Khisa's funeral held with military honours
The body of Bangladesh Navy member Troman Khisa, who died of electrocution while serving in a UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, reached his village home in Rangamati today.
Relatives and local residents gathered to see him for the last time as the body arrived at Ramhari Para in Burighat union of Naniarchar upazila this afternoon.
According to a navy press release, Khisa was severely injured by electrocution on September 20 while on duty with BANFMU-11, deployed in the UN mission in South Sudan. He died while undergoing treatment at an Indian field hospital. Recalling his contributions to the mission, the special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan paid tribute to him.
His body arrived in Dhaka yesterday morning and was later taken to his ancestral home in Rangamati.
Navy personnel transported the body and handed it over to the family. The navy later accorded Khisa a guard of honour at the Mahapuram High School grounds, where personnel paid their last respects by placing floral wreaths.
Bangladesh Navy and UN flags, cap, and medal were handed over to his wife, Rupa Chakma.
According to the press release, the funeral formalities were completed in accordance with Buddhist religious rites and customs.
The navy chief expressed deep shock and sorrow over Khisa's death and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
"Now there is nothing left but tears. I don't know what to do with my two daughters.
"What the navy is doing for us is a lot. We are grateful to the navy. If the government arranges a job for me, I will at least be able to educate my children and raise them properly," said Rupa Chakma.
Khisa's aunt, Jayanti Chakma, said, "We cannot accept his untimely death. Money cannot make up for everything. Only those who have lost a family member know how much it hurts."
