Restore media access to SC courtrooms

Leaders of different journalists’ organisations yesterday demanded the immediate restoration of journalists’ access to Supreme Court courtrooms to collect information, warning that they will launch a broader coordinated programme if the restriction is not withdrawn.

Journalists have been barred from entering the SC courtrooms and various High Court benches since January 7.

“The media had stood by the judiciary whenever previous governments attempted to undermine the courts or suppress judicial independence. When the same media faces obstacles from the highest court while performing its duty, questions arise about the democratic mindset of the judiciary’s leadership,” said Editors’ Council President and New Age Editor Nurul Kabir.

He was speaking at a sit-in organised by the Law Reporters’ Forum (LRF) in front of the SC.

“If there is any practical problem with journalists entering courtrooms, it can be resolved through discussion with journalists’ leaders,” he said, urging the SC authorities not to push journalists towards a broader movement.

Nurul Kabir said expectations for democracy, rights and justice had grown following the mass uprising, making it more important for the media to inform people about judicial proceedings.

He also said the Editors’ Council had sought a meeting with the chief justice over the issue but had not been granted one yet.

Former LRF president and Ittefaq Executive Editor Saleh Uddin said the constitution envisages trials being held in open court, yet journalists were being kept outside.

Dhaka Journalists Union President Shahidul Islam, Dhaka Reporters Unity President Abu Saleh Akon and LRF President Muhammad Yasin also spoke.

Over 200 journalists took part in the sit-in.

Among others, former LRF presidents Badiuzzaman, Ashutosh Sarkar and Shamima Akhter; DRU former president and RTV Head of News Elias Hossain; Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association General Secretary MM Badshah; Reporters Against Corruption President Shafi Uddin Ahmed; and Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy President Kazi Jebel were present.
