DU to review teachers’ appointments, July allegations

Dhaka University Syndicate has decided to review all appointments of teachers, officers and employees made between January 1, 2009, and June 30, 2024, and initiate action against teachers accused of taking positions against students during the July uprising.

The decisions were taken at a syndicate meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam. The VC confirmed the decisions to The Daily Star yesterday.

The syndicate formed a probe committee, headed by Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Abdus Salam, to review the appointments.

It also decided to examine all research projects implemented under the World Bank- and University Grants Commission-funded Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project during the same period.

The syndicate also formed a four-member committee, comprising the VC, to examine allegations against teachers who allegedly acted against students during the uprising. It will review a list of 125 teachers submitted by the Anti-Fascist Teachers platform and recommend action.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Ducsu and Islami Chhatra Shibir demonstrated outside the meeting venue, alleging the syndicate was set to approve a new hall seat allocation policy extending the residential eligibility of irregular students by one year.

Amid the protest, the syndicate did not approve the proposed policy.

The VC said a final decision would be taken after consultations with stakeholders. The university will also review footage to identify those who used loudspeakers outside the meeting room during the session.

The syndicate also decided to send to a tribunal the recommendation to permanently expel former dean of Faculty of Social Science Prof Sadeka Halim over her alleged role against students during the July uprising and other allegations. The tribunal will make the final decision.
