RMG, textile collaboration enhances Dhaka-Delhi trade relations
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma has said cooperation between India and Bangladesh in readymade garments and textile sector is a testament to their interdependence and mutual benefit.
He made the comment in an interactive session with leading businesses and business chambers of Bangladesh's textile sector in the capital today, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a statement.
The Indian embassy organised the session in context of the upcoming Bharat Tex 2025, a global textile event which will bring together important stakeholders of the textile industry under one roof.
The exhibition will be held in New Delhi on February 14-17.
Pranay Verma highlighted the importance of the RMG sector in Bangladesh's socio-economic development and also in promoting closer supply and value chain linkages between the two countries.
India is a major source of cotton yarn for Bangladesh's textile industry.
Last year, Bangladesh imported 12.15 lakh tonnes of yarn -- mainly cotton yarn -- up by 31.45 percent from 9.24 lakh tonnes in 2023, according to the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
The high commissioner also expressed hope that trade connectivity and economic engagement between India and Bangladesh will continue to bring people and businesses of the two countries closer together.
Anwar Hossain, administrator of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association; Mohammad Hatem, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association; Faruque Hassan, chairman of the Board of Trustees at BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT); and Jashim Uddin, chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank and vice chairman of Bengal Group of Industries also addressed the event.
