Suspect arrested in Munshiganj double murder
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the brutal murder of a mother and her daughter in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.
The arrestee has been identified as Mohammad Ali Hossain, 28, police said.
The arrest was disclosed at a press briefing held at the Munshiganj Superintendent of Police’s office around 3:00pm today. Munshiganj SP Md Menhazul Alam briefed journalists on the progress of the investigations.
According to police, the blood-soaked bodies of Amena Begum, 32, and her eight-year-old daughter Mariam were recovered on the morning of January 19, from a rented room in South Rajanagar area under Sirajdikhan upazila, sparking panic among the locals.
Amena’s mother, Monwara Begum, filed a murder case with Sirajdikhan Police Station against unidentified persons following the incident.
Police said Ali Hossain, who lived in the adjacent room, fled immediately after the incident. He was traced after a 10-day probe and arrested on Wednesday night near Daudkandi Bridge in Gazaria upazila. A wooden plank allegedly used in the murders was also recovered.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to attacking Amena after an argument over loud mobile phone noise. When Mariam tried to intervene, he struck her as well.
SP Alam described the accused as a "habitual drug user". Preliminary investigation has found evidence of his violent behaviour, he added.
Further investigation into the case is underway, the police superintendent said.
