Pre-polls violence: UP chairman among 84 sued in Pabna, 2 arrested
A case was filed against Pabna's Varara Union Parishad (UP) chairman, 33 named people, and 40-50 unnamed people on charge of killing an independent union parishad chairman candidate in pre-polls violence yesterday.
The deceased is Md Yasin Alam (35), a resident of Varara village and also an independent chairman candidate in the polls scheduled for December 26.
Yasin's father, Mozammel Haque, filed the case with Pabna Sadar Police Station last night, reports our local correspondent quoting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Aminul Islam.
Police today arrested two accused -- Nazrul Islam (40) and Munnaf Khan (22). Police recovered a firearm and locally made sharp weapons from their possession, the OC said.
Varara UP Chairman, Abu Sayeed, is the key accused in the case, said the OC, adding that police are trying to arrest other accused in the case, but most of the accused went into hiding after the incident.
Additional police officers have been deployed in the area, the OC added.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has postponed the election for the post of Chairman of Varara union.
