Post-polls violence: Newly elected municipality mayor of Bogura arrested
Jahangir Alam Akanda Nannu, a newly elected mayor of Bogura's Sonatala municipality, was arrested in a case filed over a post-election violence.
Jahangir, who was a rebel candidate of Awami League, was arrested from Dhaka's Mohakhali area last night, our Bogura correspondent reports quoting police.
A court in Bogura sent him to jail after rejecting bail petition when Jahangir was produced before it, court inspector Subroto Banarjee.
Jahangir, a member of Bogura District AL unit, was elected mayor of Sonatala municipality on November 2 by defeating AL-nominated candidate Sahidul Bari Khan.
Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Sonatala Police Station, said four people were stabbed during a clash between the followers of Jahangir and leaders and activists of local AL and Jubo League a day after the election (November 3).
On November 4, Nobin Anwar, former organising secretary of the Sonatala upazila AL unit, filed a case against accusing Jahangir and 30 others over the incident.
Police arrested five people in connection with the clash that night.
