Newly elected UP member shot dead in Jashore

A newly elected union parishad member was shot dead in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore tonight.

The victim, Uttam Kumar Sarker (34)of Harishpur village, was elected as a member of Ward-1 of the Sundali Union Parishad election held on December 26, reports our Benapole correspondent.

Milon Kumar, inspector (investigation) of Abhaynagar Police Station, said Uttam was shot beside the Harishpur Government Primary School around 9:00 pm.

"Miscreants intercepted Uttam near Harishpur Primary School while he was on his way back home from Sundali Bazar and opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot," said Bikash Chandra Mallik, former chairman of Sundali Union Parishad.

Hearing gunfire sound, villagers rushed to the spot while the culprits fled the scene, he said.

"Police went to the spot after the incident. We are trying to find out who killed Uttam," said Inspector Milon.
