Former bKash territory officer arrested over fraud: CID

Criminal Investigation Department yesterday arrested a former territory officer of bKash on charge of providing agents' and customers' information to fraud gangs, helping them swindle money.

The arrestee, Tanvir Siraji alias Siraj (38), was sacked from the mobile financial service in September upon receiving complaints against him.

A team of CID arrested him from Tongi area in Gazipur around 2:30pm yesterday, Saidur Rahman Khan, special superintendent (Serious Crime Division) of CID told a press briefing at its headquarters today.

The arrest came as three accused in a case filed with Sakhipur Police Station in Tangail in March, in their confessional statements before magistrates, mentioned that Tanvir was their associate in the crimes, he said.

In association with Tanvir, the fraud gang swindled Tk 4.48 lakh from two bKash agents including complainant Rasel, according to the case statement.

A former student of Jahangirnagar University, Tanvir joined bKash as the territory officer in 2012. He used to provide agents' and customers' information to the fraud gang.

CID officials said the gang used to call the clients over the phone and pretended to be callers from customer care -- wanting the clients' -- mostly agents' -- bKash PIN number or OTP and subsequently swindle money.

Meanwhile, bKash in a statement said accused Tanvir Siraji was no more with bKash.

"He has been terminated on disciplinary ground in September 2021. bKash has been cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the matter," it added.
