Expedite probe into Rohingya leader’s murder: Amnesty to Bangladesh govt

Amnesty International has called upon Bangladesh to expedite the investigation in the murder of leading Rohingya activist Mohibullah.

Amnesty International's South Asia Campaigner Saad Hammadi yesterday issued a statement in this regard.

Hammadi in the statement, said that the killing of Mohibullah, who was a leading representative of the Rohingya community and spoke out against violence in the camps, "sends a chilling effect across the entire community."

"The onus is now on the Bangladeshi authorities to expedite an investigation into his murder and bring all those suspected of criminal responsibility to justice in fair trials," he added.

In this regard, Amnesty International calls on the Bangladeshi authorities and the UN Refugee Agency to work together to ensure the protection of people in the camps, including refugees, civil society activists and humanitarian workers from both the Rohingya and host community, many of whom have shared concerns about their safety, Saad said.

"Violence in the refugee camps in Cox's Bazaar has been a growing problem. Armed groups operating drug cartels have killed people and held hostages. The authorities must take immediate action to prevent further bloodshed," he concluded.

Mohibullah was shot dead by unidentified criminals at his office room in Kutupalong under Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar last night.

He was the chairman of Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Right and played a vital role in the Rohingya repatriation process, police said.
