DSA case: Badrunnessa College teacher gets bail after 61 days in jail
After 61 days in jail and being denied bail twice from the lower courts, Ruma Sarker, assistant professor of Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls College, has obtained bail from the High Court in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.
The HC today granted bail to Ruma until submission of the police report to the trial court.
The court also issued a rule asking the state to explain why Ruma Sarker should not be granted permanent bail in this case.
The bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Atoar Rahman delivered the order and issued the rule following a petition filed by Ruma seeking bail in the case.
Ruma's principal lawyer ZI Khan Panna told The Daily Star that the HC granted bail to his client on the grounds that she is a woman, she has two children and has been suffering in jail for a long period in the case.
Lawyers Laboni Akhter and Shahinuzzaman Shahin also appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi opposed the petition.
Rapid Action Battalion arrested Ruma Sarkar on October 20 from her home in the capital's Bailey Road in connection with the case filed against her on charge of spreading provocative speeches and false videos on Facebook.
The case was filed under the DSA with Ramna Police Station on October 19.
On October 19, Ruma posted a video of trader Shahin Uddin, who was stabbed dead by two youths in front of his son on May 16 in Dhaka's Pallabi area.
