Counsellor, brother land in jail

A Bogura court yesterday sent a ward councillor and his brother to jail, rejecting their bail prayer in connection with a case for attacking a police team during a raid in Sariakandi municipality earlier in the day.

Sariakandi police arrested Apel Mahmud Rony, 35, counsellor of ward number 4 of Sariakandi Municipality, also a member of the municipality unit Awami League (AL), and his elder brother Hirok Ahmed Jony, 38, the same morning for attacking police while performing their duties.

Officer in Charge (OC) of Sariakandi Police Station Mizanur Rahman said Councillor Rony and his brother Jony are accused in an extortion case filed by the Upazila Dalil Lekhak Samity.

A police team raided the siblings' house around 1:30am early yesterday and arrested Jony, the OC said, adding that while they were returning from the spot, Rony and his 20 to 25 associates attacked the police team and tried to snatch Jony.

Later, police arrested both the siblings and produced them before the court.
