Businessman beaten to death in Gazipur, 3 detained

A businessman was beaten to death in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur today.

The deceased, Liton Chandra Ghosh alias Kali, 55, was the owner of ‘Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel’ located on Baranagar Road adjacent to the Kaliganj municipality.

Three people have been detained for their suspected involvement, said Md Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station.

The detainees are Swapan Mia, 55, his wife Majeda Khatun, 45, and their son Masum Mia, 28.

Md Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, told The Daily Star that the accused has a banana plantation. A bunch of bananas went missing from their plantation.

When they found the bananas in the hotel of businessman Liton this morming while searching, an argument started between the two parties over this. At one stage, the accused punched and kicked Liton, causing him to fall to the ground and die on the spot, he said.

The deceased's family said Masum came to the hotel around 11:00am. At that time, he had an argument with a hotel employee Ananta Das over a trivial incident. Later, Masum's father and mother came to the spot and got into a fight.

When hotel owner Liton came forward to calm the situation, he was beaten up. At one stage, he was hit on the head with a shovel and died on the spot.

The OC said that a case is underway.
