Woman killed, 4 missing as trawler capsizes in Patuakhali

A woman was killed and four others, including two eight-year-olds, went missing after a trawler carrying a wedding party sank in Tentulia river in Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali this afternoon.

The body of Lipi Begum, 30, was recovered following the incident near Auliapur around 4:30pm, said Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Dashmina Police Station.

The groom, Rabbi Hossain, 20, his mother Selina Begum, 40, Lipi Begum's daughter Khadija, 8, and another child Maria Begum, 8, remained missing till 9:30pm, the time of filing the report, according to Patuakhali correspondent.

Rabbi was returning by the trawler after his wedding at Char Shahjalal. The overloaded vessel sank when it reached mid-river due to strong currents in the river, the OC said.

A diving team of Patuakhali Fire Service and Civil Defence along with locals were searching for the missing people, he added.
