Two people were killed and five others injured when a 4x4 SUV, locally known as chander gari, plunged into a deep ravine in Bandarban's Thanchi upazila this afternoon.

The accident occurred around 3:45pm on the Dim Pahar-Tindu Mukh road in the Ekush Kilometre area of Alikadam, said Kanan Sarker, officer-in-charge of Thanchi Police Station.

The identities of the deceased and injured could not be confirmed immediately. However, preliminary information suggests that they are all from Khutakhali area of Cox's Bazar.

According to witnesses and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the vehicle was travelling from Dim Pahar towards the Tindu Mukh river ghat when the driver lost control and the vehicle fell into a deep ravine beside the road, around 600 metres from the Tindu Mukh river checkpost.

Members of the Tindu Bazar river checkpost and a BGB camp under the BGB-38 Balipara Battalion, along with Thanchi police, rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations, the OC said.

The injured were taken to Alikadam Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

The bodies were taken to Thanchi Police Station and will be sent to Bandarban District Sadar Hospital for autopsy, police said.

“No complaint has been filed by the families of the deceased yet. If a complaint is lodged, necessary legal action will be taken,” said OC Kanan Sarker.
