Khelaghar cultural competition heldA daylong competition of painting, recitation, dance, music and acting was held in the port city on Friday. The competition was organised on the occasion of Khelaghar Chittagong Metropolitan Committee Conference-2009 and Khelaghar Jatiya Kishore-Kishori Sangskritik Protijagita at Nasirabad Women College. The Conference Preparatory Committee Chairman Principal Nilufar Jahur, Convenor Rupak Chowdhury, Co-chairman M Nasirul Haque, Central Committee Assistant General Secretary Abul Farah Palash and Chittagong Metropolitan Committee General Secretary Ripon Barua spoke at the inaugural ceremony. Speakers emphasised the need for building a patriotic and scientific-minded generation to materialise the dream of charter for change. “We can achieve the goal through imbuing the next generation with the spirit of Bangali culture,” they said. Around 1,0000 contestants participated in the competition in three groups. Cantonment Public College reunion held
The second reunion of Chittagong Cantonment College was held on Friday amid enthusiasm and festivity on the college campus. Twenty-four Infantry Division GOC Major General Mohammad Shamim Chowdhury inaugurated the daylong programme in the morning. Speakers at the reunion said the students carried on the tradition of the college. The past always inspires them to go ahead and the college always made disciplined citizens, they said. Principal Colonel Mohammad Anisur Rahman Chowdhury, the reunion committee convener Manjurul Haque and Media Communicator Shipon Chandra Devnath spoke at the programme. Former principals of the college were present. Later, artistes of renowned band group Souls and local artiste Hoimanti Rakkhit Man enthralled the former students with their melodious numbers. A daylong eye camp was organised at SOS Children's Village in city's Halishahar area on Sunday marking the International SOS Children's Village Day- 2009. SOS Children's Village and Sajan Samaj Seba Sangstha jointly organised the camp where Maa Shishu O General Hospital Assistant Director (Nursing) Dr Mohammad Liakat Ali Bhuiyan was present as the chief guest. The Sangstha Chief Executive Dr Mohammad Ahsan Rakib was the special guest at the programme chaired by the Village Project Director Mohammad Foyjul Kabir. Speakers at the function emphasised the need for taking more care of eyes of the children and urged all to feed them food enriched with vitaminA. Members of detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) seized huge fake stamps and court fees and arrested five people in this connection from city's Agrabad area on Sunday. The arrestees were identified as Abul Hossain, 38, Akter Hossain, 38, Rafiqul Islam, 35, Hanif Mian, 35, and Alamgir Hossain, 40. Sources said a DB team led by Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Wahidul Haque arrested them on charge of selling fake stamps and court fees in front of Parichoy Stationery in the Agrabad area. The DB men seized fake stamps and court fees of Tk 2,83,325 from their possession. In the interrogation, The arrestees during interrogation said they have been selling the fake stamps and court fees at different points of the city since long. A case was field with the Double-mooring police station in this connection. Int'l Public Service Day observed
Speakers at a discussion said main purpose of the state is to deliver expected services to its citizen. They said participation of the service providers and consumers is needed to build a modern country. They were addressing a discussion organised by the district administration to mark the “International Public Service Day-2009” at Chittagong Circuit House. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury was the chief guest at the discussion presided over by Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury. The speakers said public service is a social responsibility and there is no way to avoid it. They called upon all to help build a prosperous Bangladesh. Chittagong Divisional Commissioner MNA Siddique, 'Sujan' Chittagong Chapter President Prof Sikander Khan, Chittagong University Law Faculty Dean Prof Zakir Hossain, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Senior Vice President MA Salam and Chittagong Press Club President Abu Sufian addressed the discussion.
