German co to develop commuter train serviceGerman Mobility Company has shown keen interest in introducing commuter train service in Chittagong with a view to helping thousands of people commuting the city from outskirts everyday. Director of the company Gregur Koul Housen expressed this while making a courtesy call on acting mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) M Manjur Alam at his office on Monday. Koul Housen said the train service would be the best one for around 1.25 lakh people, who come to the city daily for livelihood. Thanking the director for his proposal Manjur said it would be helpful for thousands of workers in Chittagong Port and EPZ area if a commuter train service is introduced between Bhatiary and Chittagong EPZ. He assured of sending the proposal to the ministry concerned and advised the company to contact Bangladesh Railway authorities. Aktel-Drishty debate begins
Former Chittagong University (CU) vice-chancellor Dr Alamgir Md Sirajuddin said, “Practice of debate teaches us to honour and tolerate other's opinions and logics.” He was addressing as the chief guest the inaugural ceremony of debate competition titled 'Aktel-Drishty English Debate Championship' at Theatre Institute Chattagram (TIC) on Saturday. Drishty, a cultural organisation, is organising the contest in cooperation with Aktel, one of the mobile operators in the country. Star Campus, a weekly of The Daily Star is the media partner of the competition. Chittagong College Principal Prof Syed Md Shahidullah, Bureau Chief of New Age Nurul Alam and Drishty adviser Bilkis Rashed were the special guests at the function with Drishty advisar Safia Rahman in the chair. Speakers said debate help a person to become logical and such logical people would be able to lead the country in future. Debaters from 12 English medium schools are participating in the competition. Drishty President Masud Bakul, General Secretary Saif Chowdhury and programme coordinator Syed Rifat Faruq also spoke at the function. Four debates were held on the first day participated by Cider International School, Bay View School, Sunshine Grammar School and Child Heaven School. A month-long sale festival titled 'Mimi Summer Festival 08' began at Mimi Super Market on Monday with a view to providing better service to customers. Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner M Akbar Ali as the chief guest inaugurated the festival. District and Sessions Judge Majnul Ahsan Khan said lawyers can take brave steps to lead the society in right way. He urged the young lawyers to prepare themselves them properly at the beginning of their careers. Art and craft exhibition held
A daylong art and craft exhibition was held at Bangladesh Elementary School on Saturday. Director of the school Farah Ahmed inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest. Farah emphasised the need for giving the students more scope in practising different extra curricular activities. She also urged the guardians to cooperate in this regard. A number of paintings and handmade motifs made by the students of the schools were displayed at the exhibition. Speakers at a workshop urged the government to implement the National Women Development Policy (NWDP) 2008 immediately. They said it was not clear to people why the government was hesitating over implementation of the policy. Institute for Environment and Development (IED), a non-government organisation (NGO), organised the workshop titled 'National Women Development Policy (NWDP): Bangladesh context' on Thursday. Representatives from different non-government organisations and cultural organisations like Lead, Park, Sangshaptak, Drishty and Chittagong University Debating Society (CUDS) participated in the workshop. Speakers said there is some conservative section of people in every country and government should not give importance to their opinions depriving the rights of women community consisting half of the country's population. Jenifer Fouji Shila presented the keynote paper at the workshop. Divisional Coordinator of Prashika Shahid Mufti, executive director of UTSA Mostafa Kamal, executive director of Mamata Momena Akhter Noyon and reporter of daily Suprabhat Bangladesh Soumen Dhar addressed the workshop among others.
