Shanto laid to rest

He was supposed to be present at Shahbagh for chanting slogans and singing inspirational songs. But now his name itself has come into slogans to gear up the comrades at the demonstration venue. Cartoonist, playwright and activist Tariqul Islam Shanto, 39, who was shouting slogans at the top of his voice till last minutes of his life, was laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard in the capital yesterday. On Monday, he suffered a cardiac arrest when staging demonstrations at Shahbagh, and died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. Several hundred people including the Shahbagh protesters, artists and bloggers took part in the second namaz-e-janaza of Shanto at the central mosque of Dhaka University around 11:30am yesterday. After attending the janaza, prominent dramatist and actor Mamunur Rashid said Shanto always made drama based on stories of the country's Liberation War. Amin Azad, a TV actor and Shanto's colleague, said, "Shanto used to hold the spirit of Liberation War in his heart and expressed his ideology and spirit though his creatures like drama and cartoon." Hailed from Bashail of Tangail, Shanto started his career as a cartoonist at the Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj.
