Punish culprits who assaulted newly appointed principal
Demand BM College students
General students of Government Brojo Mohan (BM) College took out a procession in Barisal city yesterday demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits responsible for attack on Prof Shankar Chandra Dutt, newly appointed principal of the college, on Tuesday.
They later submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) demanding immediate steps to ensure security of the general students on the college campus.
All the academic activities at the college have remained suspended since January 29 as the college unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) led by its joint conveners Moin Tushar and Nahid Serniabad have been protesting the transfer of former principal Prof Nani Gopal Das, campus sources said.
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists led by college unit joint convenor Moin Tushar assaulted Prof Shankar and forced him out of the campus when he went there on Tuesday afternoon to take over the charge.
Moin Tushar, however, rejected the accusation and claimed that his men had rescued Shankar instead and arranged for his safe exit from the campus.
Maksudul Alam Masud, joint convener of another faction of the BCL unit, alleged that the outgoing principal Prof Nani Gopal Das and a section of BCL men loyal to him had a role in the incident. They had been involved in corruption and admission trade and so want cancellation of the new appointment to keep their misdeeds from getting exposed.
Nani Gopal refuted this claim and said he had already handed over the charge to the acting principal on February 3.
