Production of coriander (locally known as dhoney) is likely to cross the target in the district this year due to favorable climatic condition. Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office in the district said, about 1,478 hectares of land were brought under coriander farming with a production target of 2,657 tonnes in the current year. This correspondent recently visited different areas of Sadar upazila, including Rasti, Lakkhiganj, Panchkhola, Naya Madaripur, Kukrail and Charmaguria villages and noticed massive cultivation of the crop. During talks with agriculturists and local farmers, almost all of them expressed optimism about good harvest of coriander in those villages. Coriander seeds have been sown in vast areas under Sadar upazila which had been affected by flood last year, agriculture officials said. The seeds sprouted well as the late winter climate was favourable for growing coriander in the district, they said. The coriander fields in the villages were giving an eye-soothing sight with the colour of the sprouts turning bottle green. Sohrab Kazi of Lakkhiganj in Sadar upazila told this correspondent that the recent flood had caused a lot of damage to the village. But the flood waters had also left a huge silt into the fields, making the land well fertile for cultivating coriander. Md Golam Mostafa, deputy director of the DAE said the weather in the district is favorable in the current robi season as there was no rainfall in the last two months.
