Settlers enforce hartal in three hill districts
A daylong hartal enforced by Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parisahd (PBCP) was observed peacefully in Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban districts yesterday.
PBCP, student wing of Bangalee settlers, called the hartal in the three hill districts protesting rape of a 14-year-old Bangalee schoolgirl and murder of a brick kiln worker in Khagrachhari and abduction of two youths in Bandarban recently.
Pro-haltal activists took out processions in different areas of the districts and put up barricades on the roads. No untoward incident was reported from any of the three districts during hartal hours.
Our Khagrachhari correspondent reported that PBCP men staged demonstration in Shapla Chattar and bus terminal areas in the town. They also put up barricades on the roads and burned tyres.
Shops, educational institutions remained closed and vehicles were off the roads. No long distance buses left or entered the town during the hartal.
In Rangamati, pickets blocked roads in different areas of the district during hartal. Educational institutions and business establishments remained closed while attendance in the private offices was thin, reports our correspondent.
In Bandarban, local and inter-district transport services remained suspended while educational institutions and private organisations were closed during the daylong shutdown.
On January 25, brick kiln worker Mohammad Faruk Hossain was shot dead by criminals at Gazinagar in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district. A 14-year-old schoolgirl from Garjantali area of Ramgarh upazila was raped by a trucker and his three cohorts in Alutila tourist area of the district town on February 4.
On February 5, criminals abducted Mohammad Imran and Mohammad Hanif from Balaghata Bazar in Bandarban. Two Grameenphone employees were also kidnapped from Kutukchhari Bazar of Rangamati on February 8.
