500kg <i>jatka</i> seized, three fishermen fined

Coastguards seized over 500 Kg of Jatka (hilsa fry less than nine inches long) from a trawler on Taltali Chanel of Kirtonkhola River on Friday. Commander SM Sarkar said they found the fish while searching the trawler in the morning and arrested three fishermen named Ibrahim ,Riyadh and Amir. Later, the arrestees were produced before a mobile court led by Magistrate Rubel Mahmud, who realised Tk 1,000 as fine from each of the tree and set them free. The magistrate also asked the district fishery officer to distribute the seized hilsa fries to different orphanages. District Fishery Officer Whiduzzaman said they distributed the seized fish among 22 madrasas and some slums in presence of coastguard officials. On Tuesday, over 1,500kg of Jatka and fishing nets were seized from a passenger launch on Kalabadar River under Mehendiganj Upazila of the district. Coastguard office Faruk Hossain said they seized the large amount of fish and nets while searching passenger launch MV Jamal-1. According to the district fishery officer, none was arrested in this connection, and the seized fish were distributed to 28 madrasas and some slums.
