Extradition treaty gets Indian cabinet nod
The Indian cabinet yesterday approved an extradition treaty to be signed with Bangladesh during its home minister's visit to Dhaka next week.
The treaty will facilitate handing over of convicts and wanted criminals.
A new visa agreement is also expected to be signed during Sushilkumar Shinde's two-day visit beginning on Monday.
According to the new visa pact, entry for students, businessmen, medical patients, senior citizens above 65 years and children below 12 years will be relaxed.
Businessmen will gain a five-year multiple entry visa and those seeking medical treatment will get a two-year multiple entry visa that can be extended for another year. Each patient can apply for the visa for three attendants.
Students can enjoy a one-year multiple entry travel document. India has also agreed to waive the 60-day cooling off period for second visit of a Bangladeshi, though the restriction is still applicable to Pakistan, among other countries.
The new visa agreement with Bangladesh will be on the lines of the liberalised visa regime between India and Pakistan, an Indian home ministry official said yesterday.
