OC, three cops hurt as gamblers swoop on them in Lalmonirhat
Officer in-charge (OC) of a police station and two others policemen were injured in Lalmonirhat while their van was vandalised as gamblers attacked them on Wednesday.
Away in Noakhali, a man was stabbed to death allegedly by a gambler in Begumganj upazila yesterday.
On Wednesday night, gamblers attacked OC Mosabbarul Haque of Aditmari PS in Lalmonirhat and another two constables, leaving them injured.
They also smashed a police van at Kuzabazar village in Aditmari upazila, reports our correspondent.
The injured were admitted to the upazila health complex, said police.
Police later arrested Istiyak Ahmed Shipon, 25, son of Durgapur union parishad (UP) member Mostafizur Rahman, Nazidul Islam, 32, son of late Golzar Hossain, Dulal Hossain, 35, son of Nur Mohammad, Abdul Halim, 26, son of Abdul Aziz and Shihab Pramanik, 28, nephew of the UP chairman Salequzzaman Pramanik of the village in this connection.
OC Mosabbarul said, on secret information, he along with the constables raided the village at around 11:00pm while a gang of 25/30 was gambling there.
Sensing their presence, the gamblers led by Salequzzaman Pramanik attacked them, vandalised the van and fled the scene, said Mosabbarul.
On information, addition police rushed to the spot and arrested the five, said the OC.
Contacted, the UP chairman refuted the allegation.
Our Noakhali correspondent reported that a man was killed allegedly by a gambler at Panditerhat village in Begumgonj upazila early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Md Salahuddin, 40, son of Md Ali of Narottampur village.
Police arrested Md Joynal, 52, son of Jabed Mia, and Md Faruk, 38, son of Md Joynal, in this connection.
Syed Md Ahasanul Islam, officer in-charge at Begumgonj PS, said Salahuddin and his associates Faruk and Tofail were gambling at about 1:00am.
At one stage, Faruk attacked Salauddin with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot following an altercation over distribution of gambling money.
On information, police rushed in, recovered the body and sent it to Noakhali Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC.
