Indefinite transport strike called off after 8 hours
Transport owners and workers who went on an indefinite strike in 21 southwestern districts to realise their 11-point demand yesterday, called off the programme in the afternoon.
The strike disrupted traffic movement in the districts, including Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Satkhira, Jhenidah, Faridpur, Magura, Narail, Rajbari, Bagerhat, Bhola, Barisal and Pirojpur, for about eight hours.
The transport owners' and workers' demands include halting vandalism and arson attack on buses and trucks alter accident, end to plying of human haulers like Nasimon, Karimon, easy bike on highways, stopping extortion by highway police and realisation of excessive toll at ferry ghats.
SM Shah Alam Mukul, president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik-Sramik Oikya Parishad (BSPMSOP) told a press conference in Faridpur yesterday that they withdrew the strike as the authorities agreed to take steps in favour of their demands.
“We are likely to sit with Communication Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday in Madaripur district over the issues,” Mukul told the journalists.
Earlier on September 27, the organisation announced in Khulna that they would enforce the strike on October 9.
The strike would be held in 10 districts of Khulna division, four of Dhaka division and seven in Barisal division, it said.
NAOGAON STRIKE
Meanwhile, the District Motor Sramik Union of Naogaon withdrew its 48-hour strike yesterday evening after a discussion with local administration, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent. The transport workers went on a 48-hour strike yesterday morning protesting attack on their load points and offices by criminals on July 8in the name of truck labourers and demanding arrest of the culprits. Bus services to and from Naogaon came to a halt and ticket counters remained closed till evening, causing immense sufferings to the passengers. Truck and tank lorries were also off the town streets.
