Prime accused Jubo League leader Alamgir arrested

Md Alamgir Hossain, prime accused in the case for felling nearly 4,000 trees of Dharmajan forest under Biral upazila of the district, was arrested on Saturday. Police arrested Alamgir, general secretary of Jubo League Dharmapur union unit, at Kamdevpur village of the upazila in the evening. He was yesterday produced in a magistrate's court that sent him to jail. With the arrest of Alamgir, police have so far nabbed 10 of the 200 accused in the case filed by the forest officials. According to the forest officials, Alamgir and his hired goons cut down at least 4,000 acacia and eucalyptus trees on a 20-acre area of Dharmajan forest under Dharmapur forest beat on three consecutive nights since Friday (September 28). Forest officials filed a case with Biral Police Station on October 1, accusing 200 people. Of them, 17 are identified while the rest unidentified. Police arrested three people soon after filing of the case. On October 3, the identified accused in the case were granted bail by a Dinajpur court. But the same gang on the same night again felled 1,400 trees of the forest. Being informed by locals, Police Superintendent Md Moinul Islam and Divisional Forest Official (DFO) of Dinajpur Md Ali Kabir visited the forest area on Thursday and set up a police camp there. DFO Ali Kabir said the gang felled the trees in a bid to grab the forest land. A human chain was formed in front of Biral Police Station yesterday demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused in the case for chopping the trees of Dharmajan forest. Several hundred people of Dharmapur union joined the programme that continued for an hour from 11:00am.
