4 policemen sent to jail in Tangail
Four policemen, accused of torturing a man to death in Basail upazila on Tuesday, were sent to jail yesterday.
They were arrested from Tangail police lines soon after filing of a murder case by victim's wife Rashida Begum with Basail Police Station on Wednesday night.
Police produced Assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Mohammad Suruzzaman and Jahangir Hossain, constables Mamun Miah and Sarwar Hossain of Basail Police Station in the Judicial Magistrate's Court of Tangail in the morning. After hearing, the court sent them to the jail.
Police informant Bazlur Rahman Helal, another accused in the case, is still at large. He had gone into hiding soon after the incident.
The four plainclothes policemen went to Sunna village in the upazila on Tuesday afternoon and chased a few villagers who were playing cards on a field.
At one stage, the law enforcers caught one Lal Miah of the village, 40, on a nearby road. They beat him up and then dunked him into a pond.
Locals encircled the cops, rescued Lal Miah and sent him to the upazila health complex where the doctors declared him dead. As the news spread, the villagers beat up the policemen and confined them to a house.
On information, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mizanur Rahman and Basail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahin Ara Begum reached the village and held a meeting with villagers.
The villagers freed the four cops after the ASP and the UNO assured them of taking actions against them. The cops were immediately closed to the police lines and then suspended.
A daylong hartal was observed in Basail upazila on Wednesday demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the policemen responsible for the death of Lal Miah.
