Tortured by police, man dies
Hartal observed in Basail upazila, four cops closed
A daylong hartal was observed in Basail upazila yesterday, protesting the death of a man due to torture by police.
The protesters brought out a procession and held a rally at Basail bus stand in the morning and blocked the road by burning tyres demanding punishment to the cops responsible for the death of a man of Sunna village under the upazila.
Locals said four plainclothes policemen of Basail Police Station went to the village and chased a few villagers who were playing cards on Tuesday evening.
At one stage, the law enforcers caught one Lal Mia, 45, of the village, who was standing on a nearby road. They beat up Lal Mia and dunked him into a pond.
The villagers encircled the cops, rescued Lal Mia and sent him to the upazila health complex where the doctors declared him dead.
As the news spread, the villagers beat up the policemen and confined them to a house. On information, a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mizanur Rahman and UNO Shahin Ara Begum reached the village.
The villagers freed the cops after the ASP and the UNO assured them of taking actions against the policemen.
The four policemen--Assistant sub-inspectors Jahangir Hossain, Suruzzaman, constables Sarwar Hossain and Shamim Reza-- were closed to the district police lines yesterday.
