Lightning kills five in three districts
Five people were killed and 13 others injured by lightning in Nilphamari, Chapainawabganj and Thakurgaon districts yesterday.
In Nilphamari, lightining killed three people and injured 13 others in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas, according to UNB.
The deceased were identified as Abdus Salam, 45, son of Olimullah Haque; Azizul Haqe, 50, son of Azizar Rahman in Dimla upazila; and Jannatun, 30, wife of Mahabul Hossain of Chirabhija Golna village in Jaldhaka upazila.
Locals said a thunderbolt struck Salam and Azizul at around 9:30 am while they were gossiping at Chatnai village. They died on the spot. Salam's two brothers- Abdus Sattar and Abdus Samad --were injured in the incident.
In another incident, Jannatun was struck by lightning while working at their kitchen at the same time. Her daughter Manira, 7, and mother-in-law Amena Khatun were injured in the incident.
The others injured by lightning are Abu Sama, 45, of Uttar Kharibari village; Amena Begum, 40, Olima Begum, 35, Monwara Begum, 35, of Akashkuri village; Sharpa Bala, 50, Sahoban Banu, 50, of Uttar Sundarkhata village; Latifa Begum, 30, Bulbuli
Begum, 30, and Parvin Akhter, 30, of Uttar Titpara village in Dimla upazila.
The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
Our correspondent from Chapainawabganj reported that a boatman was killed by lightning at Gopalpur village under Shibganj upazila of the district yesterday noon.
The deceased was identified as, Sadekul Islam, 32, son of Kutub Ali of Gopalpur village of the upazila.
Police quoted family members as saying that Sadekul was struck by lightning while he was crossing the river Pagla by a boat at around 2:00pm. He died instantly.
In Thakurgaon, A girl was struck by lightning and died on the spot at Kushaldangi village under Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district yesterday, reports our correspondent.
She was identified as Moina,12, daughter of Toslimuddin of the village.
Bara Palashbari Union Parishad Chairman Md Monsur Alam told this correspondent over cellphone that Moina was struck by lightning in front of their house at around 3:00pm.
