Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma alias Santu Larma yesterday said that an elected government does not always mean a democratic government. Democratic government establishes the rights of people. So elect a progressive, non-communal, pro-people government to ensure the basic rights of the common and oppressed people, he said. Santu Larma, also president of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), was addressing the tri-annual conference of Bangladesh Hindu Buoddha Christian Oikya Parishad, Barisal district and city units, at Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city as chief guest yesterday. The conference was presided over by Shanti Ranjan Chakroborty, district president of BHBCOP, and inaugurated by AL lawmaker Talukdar Md. Yunus. "This undemocratic, ultra-nationalist government cannot ensure the rights of the minorities and oppressed people. Repression will continue till we elect a progressive, non-communal and democratic government," Larma said. Due to oppression and discrimination since the liberation war, the rate of poverty among the indigenous and Dalit (oppressed) people are much higher than the average poverty level, he added. From the past experiences we have learnt that rights must be achieved through struggle. So we must prepare ourselves to earn our rights under proper, honest, competent and non-opportunist leadership.
