Flood situation in Sirajganj, Bogra, Gaibandha worsens

The flood situation in Sirajganj, Bogra and Gaibandha districts has worsened further, leaving around five lakh people marooned. At least 65,000 people of Jamuna River basin under 51 unions in nine upazilas of Sirajganj were hit by flood in the last three days. The affected upazilas are Kazipur, Sadar, Belkuchi, Chowhali, Shahzadpur, Raiganj, Taras, Ullapara, and Kamarkhand, reports our correspondent. The river water was flowing 61 centimetres above the danger mark yesterday morning, said an official of Water Development Board (WDB). A large number of homesteads and crops including aman paddy, lentils and vegetables on 7000 hectares of land were damaged. Brahmaputra flood control embankment in the district is now under the threat of erosion, the official said. Road communication between Sonamukhi and Bogra remained snapped as a bailey bridge at Paikarhat in Kazipur upazila went under water. District relief and disaster management officer Amjad Hossain said about 148 metric tonnes of GR rice have been allocated for the flood affected people. In Bogra, heavy rain in the last few days, coupled with onrush of water from the upstream, triggered flash flood, affecting more than two lakh people in Dhunat and Shariakandi upazilas. At least 25 villages of Jamuna basin in the upazilas have gone under water, reports a correspondent. T-aman paddy, spice, vegetables, etc on about 2,358 hectares of land were washed away, said Bazlur Rashid Raja , deputy director of department of agriculture extension (DAE), Bogra. A flood control embankment at Chandonbaisha in Shariakandi upazila also collapsed, WDB sources. A villager of Jora Shimul in Dhunat upazila told this correspondent that the floodwater damaged T-Aman on 4.5 bighas of his land. Atiqul Karim Apple, chairman of Bhandabari union in Dhunat, said the entire union was inundated due to swelling of the river. The deputy commissioner said, about 800 metric tonnes of rice and some cash money would be allocated for the affected people soon. Away in Gaibandha, flood situation in the district deteriorated further yesterday as the water level of Jamuna and Ghagot rivers continued to rise, reports our correspondent. Char areas of 21 unions in Sadar, Phulchhari and Shaghata upazilas have been affected, leaving over 2 lakh people marooned, said WDB sources. Railway goods wagon ferry service between Balashi and Bahadurabad ghats remained suspended on Thursday night as rail tracks at a point went under water. Educational institutions in the areas have been shut down due to the flash flood. The food affected people are facing serious problem due to acute crisis of drinking water and foods, said Abdul Matin Mandol, chairman of Uria union in Phulchhari upazila. Meanwhile, a large crack developed in Ghagot river protection dyke at Taltola in Sadar upazila, said locals. On the other hand, erosion by the Jamuna River rendered over 300 families homeless at Ratanpur, Kalasona in Fulchari upazila, Gobindi, Haldia and Hasilkandi in Shaghata upazila in the last three days. The district administration has allocated Tk five lakh and 100 tonnes of rice for the flood affected people.
