Members of Bangladesh Coastguard during raids in Meghna and Dhaleswari in Munshiganj Meghna and Padma in Chandpur yesterday seized around four lakh metres of current nets and over 40 maunds of mother hilsa. Over one lakh metres of the banned nets were seized in Munshiganj. None was held as the nets were recovered from the rivers, reports our correspondent. The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-11) also seized over 40 maunds of mother hilsa from two trucks at Kabutorkhola in Sreenagar upazila of the district. In Chandpur, a coastguard team in separate drives seized 17 maunds of hilsa and 2.8 lakh metres of current nets from different points of the rivers yesterday, reports our correspondent. The team also arrested 14 fishermen on charge of hilsa fishing, defying the 11-day ban imposed by the government. Station Commander of Coastguard Lieutenant Commandant Zahirul Haque led the drives from 5:00am to 2:00pm yesterday. Of the 14 arrested fishermen, twelve were later jailed for 15 days by a mobile court. The remaining two were released for one being old while the other being of tender age. The authorities imposed a countrywide ban on catching, transporting, marketing and selling of hilsa fish for 11 days from September 25 to facilitate egg laying and thereby boosting the production of the delicious fish. The seized hilsa was later distributed among the poor and orphans, said Zahirul Haque, adding that the nets would be destroyed.
