Fresh areas go under flood water, breaches in dykes

Swelling Jamuna washed away a portion of the flood control embankment at Daskandi point under Shivalaya upazila in Manikganj yesterday. Around 20 meters of the dyke was damaged by the river at around 11.00am inundating aman paddy on around three thousand acres of land in Daskandi Chak village, reports our correspondent. The river was flowing 34cm above the danger level yesterday morning while the water level increased by 16cm at Aricha point in the last 24 hours, the Water Development Board sources said. GAIBANDHA
In Gaibandha, fresh areas were flooded in Jamuna and Ghagot basins yesterday due to continued onrush of water from the upstream, reports our correspondent. According to WDB, about two lakh 50 thousand people have been marooned in different low lying areas of Saghata, Sadar and Phulchhari upazilas. All the tubewells in flood-affected areas went under water creating acute crisis of pure drinking water, said Abdul Matin Mandol, chairman of Arendabari union in Phulchhari upazila. Relief materials for the flood affected people who took shelter on different dykes and high land are too adequate, said Abdul Hamid Sarker of Uria union in the upazila. A portion of flood control dyke at Ratanpur in the upazila faces threat of collapse any time. Workers of WDB and local people are dumping sand bags to stop seepage, said an official of WDB. Vast areas of Narayanpur got flooded as gushing water entered through the breach of Ghagot flood control dyke. Road communication between Chapadaha-Sadullapur-Joyenpur snapped as a bridge collapsed by the surging water, he said. According to the district agriculture extension department, crops including aman and vegetables on over 6,000 hectare of land in the three upazilas will be damaged due to the flash flood. SIRAJGANJ
Overall flood situation in Sirajganj deteriorated further yesterday as the water level of the Jamuna River continued to rise, reports our correspondent. Onrush of floodwater through the breached embankment in Sariakandi under Bogra district inundated fresh areas in Kazipur, Raiganj and Taras upazilas. More than 200 villages of 16 unions under Sadar, Belkuchi, Chowhali and Shahzadpur upazilas have gone under floodwater. At least 1.5 kilometer of Kazipur-Sonamukhi pucca road at Paikortoli point has been flooded and a baily bridge on Iachhamati River collapsed, snapping internal communication. So far, 11 markets are now under knee-deep water. Aman paddy on more than 8500 hectares has been flooded while vegetables and other crops also damaged. Cracks developed in Brahmaputra flood control embankment at Gopalpur village, said the UNO of Shahzadpur.
