65 BNP men held for attack on police get bail
Sixty-five leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations who were sued on charge of attack on police during clashes between rival factions of the party on 19 September night were granted bail yesterday.
The BNP men include district joint secretary of the party Dr. Ahmedur Rahman Abdal, district Jubo Dal president Azizur Rahman Kajol, general secretary Mia Mohammad Ilyas and organising secretary Jalal Ahmed, district JCD convener Tajul Islam Chowdhury Farid and joint convener Syed Mushfique Ahmed and district Sramik Dal convener Islam Tarafder.
Police fired 44 rounds of rubber bullets and 8 gunshots during the clash between rival factions of BNP that left about 50 people injured.
Two cases were filed on charge of vandalism at the restaurant of an AL leader and for attack on police during the clash between rival factions of the party in Habiganj district town.
Sub-inspector Nurul Islam of Habiganj Sadar police station filed the case accusing 150, naming 82 people of BNP and its front organisations.
The clash took place when the BNP central vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury was holding a meeting at the Habiganj press club auditorium on the day. The clash later spread to several points of the town.
Party sources said, there had been a longstanding rivalry between the two factions -- one led by the Habiganj district BNP general secretary GK Gous, also the Habiganj pourashava mayor and the other led by the district BNP chief, former state minister Syed Mohammad Faisal.
