100 Jamaat men sued, 7 arrested in Panchagarh

About 100 Jamaat men, including district nayeb-e ameer and also Sadar upazila chairman Abdul Khalek, were sued on Tuesday night on charge of beating up BCL and Jubo League men. Jubo League activist Md. Masum filed the case, without identifying 39 accused, with Panchagarh police station. Police arrested seven people including Anwar Hossain, 30, Amirul Islam, 24, Rafiqul Islam, 25, Ali Hossain, 40, Abdul Malek, 27, Hasibul Islam, 30, and Rubul Amin, 22, on Tuesday night. The arrestees were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court yesterday afternoon and the judge ordered to send them to jail. Police and witnesses said, on Tuesday at about 5:00pm, the Jamaat men brought out a procession in Panchagarh town protesting the arrest of their nayeb-e ameer Maolana Abdus Subhan. After the procession, they were holding a rally in front of LG Show Room. At that time, district unit general secretary of BCL Mizanur Rahman and Jubo League activist Md. Masum were going by the area. All of a sudden, the Jamaat and Shibir men swooped on them and gave them a good beating. Hearing the news, the agitated BCL and Jubo League men rushed to the place and at one stage attacked Jamaat leader Abdul Khalek's house and business establishment. The BCL-Jubo League activists also barricaded Panchagarh-Tentulia Highway at Chowrangi crossing for two hours, demanding arrest of the local Jamaat ameer. Later at 7:00am they withdrew the barricade on request of the local lawmaker and also district unit general secretary of Awami League Mozaharul Haque Prodhan.
