C'nawabganj mayor, 44 others sued
A case was filed against 45 men including Mayor Abdul Matin of Chapainawabganj municipality on Monday night on several charges including demolition of boundary wall of proposed Muktijodhha Complex and extortion.
Of the accused, 20 were named while 25 remained unidentified.
Abdur Rahman, commander of Sadar upazila unit of Muktijodhha Sangsad filed the case with Sadar police station.
Police arrested two persons in this connection that night from their houses at Pathanpara area in town. They are Sunil Chandra Saha and Saddam Hossain.
Police said, a section of staff of Chapainawabganj municipality, led by its mayor, demolished the boundary wall of proposed Muktijodhha Complex in New Market area on September 7.
Golam Rabbani, Commander of District Muktijodhha Sangsad said, government allocated a piece of land in New Market area during the Ershad regime in 1990.
The present government sanctioned Tk 1.53 crore for the complex in the current fiscal year.
Earlier, Public Works Department (PWD) completed its design for a multistoried building at the site, carried out tender process this year and appointed a contractor.
When they started the work, the mayor and his staff came to the spot and demolished the boundary walls on September 7, the said.
He further said that Abdul Odud, lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-3 constituency (Sadar) Moinuddin Mondal and Ruhul Amin, chairman of Sadar upazila parishad tried to settle the matter. They called both parties on Monday but mayor Matin did not turn up at the arbitration meeting.
They then filed a case against the mayor and other 44 men.
Earlier, On September 7, they lodged a complaint with the Sadar police station in this regard.
Contacted, mayor Abdul Matin said that the case was 'false and baseless'.
"I had proposed to give a piece of land for building Muktijodhha Complex at another place. But they did not accept my offer," he said.
