Criminals set UP office afire in Meherpur

Unidentified criminals torched a Union Parishad (UP) office in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur district last night. Important documents, books, furniture and portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were damaged by the fire. Subhas Biswas, officer-In-charge (OC) of Mujibnagar Police Station, said criminals entered Monakhali Union Parishad office by breaking open the door at dead of night and set fire to it. Safiqul Islam, chairman of the union parishad filed a case with Mujibnagar Police Station yesterday morning. On one was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Mujibnagar upazila units of Awami League and Jubo League brought out a procession at the upazila headquarters yesterday demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nazmunnahar Begum visited the UP office yesterday morning. Contacted, OC Subhas Biswas said they will soon identify the criminals and bring them to book.
