Building construction on at occupied <i>khas</i> land

A ruling party man is constructing a multi-storied building at Kalaiya Bazar in Baufal upazila under the district after occupying a piece of khas land only about 200 metres from the union land office. Shamim Mollah, former president of Baufal upazila unit of Swechchhasebok League, a wing of ruling Awami League, is constructing the building covering about one katha of khas land (khas khatian No 556). Shamim began construction work of the multi-storied building on khas land at Kalaiya Bazar about six months ago and he has already rented three shops of the ground floor in the under construction building, locals said. Construction of the roof of the first floor is also complete. Locals alleged that at the time of starting the work many people informed local land officials about the matter but they did not take any step to stop the construction. Local UP Chairman Monir Mollah, also secretary of Baufal upazila Jubo League, said, "I requested the upazila administration to take step against the occupier of the khas land more than once but to no effect." Talking with this correspondent over cell phone, Shamim Mollah claimed that he is constructing a building at Kalaiya Bazar on an 800 square feet land, which is his father's property. When contacted, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abul Kalam Azad, also acting assistant commissioner (Land) of Baufal, said, "We are investigating the matter. We will take lawful action if anybody occupies khas land. The deputy commissioner also asked me to take proper step in this regard."
