People of 2 Rangpur city areas suffer
People of east and west Khasbagh areas in Rangpur city were without electricity for over 72 hours till yesterday as a transformer went out of order on Wednesday.
People of the two areas sought help of the local Power Development Board (PDB). But the officials concerned at Rangpur PDB demand Tk 50,000 for replacement of the transformer, locals alleged.
Agitated locals put up barricade on a city road for two hours from 8:00am yesterday. As movement of hundreds of vehicles from Rangpur city to Satmatha came to a halt, police rushed to the spot.
Police assured the agitating people of arranging a new transformer within 5:00 on the day to ensure smooth power supply.
Locals alleged that on Wednesday night, a transformer of the area caught fire and went out of order due to heavy rain. Being informed, PDB men visited the spot, checked the transformer and left the area.
When the locals went to the Rangpur PDB office for replacement of the transformer, the PDB officials demanded Tk 50,000 from them.
Contacted, Obaidul Islam, chief engineer of the Power Development Board (PDB) of Rangpur Distribution Zone refuted the allegation of demanding Tk 50,000 as bribe for a new transformer.
"We will set up a transformer this evening, he added.
