Teacher held for caning student
Police yesterday afternoon arrested a madrasa teacher at Kalinagar village in Sadar upazila on charge of beating a student and injuring him seriously.
Although corporal punishment at educational institutions is banned, Abdul Mazid ignored it and caned his student mercilessly.
Mazid is a teacher of Alhaj Hafiz Uddin Arabia and Hafezia Madrasa at Kalinagar village.
Injured student Touhidul Islam, 11, son of Torikul Islam of Bablabona-Kalinagar village told this correspondent at Adhunik Sadar Hospital that he was sleeping at the madrasa dormitory in the morning. His teacher sent a boy to call him for attending class at 6:30am.
"As I was late, the teacher got furious and started beating me with a stick ruthlessly and injured me seriously" he said.
Victim's father Torikul Islam filed a case against the teacher with Sadar model police station. Later, police went to the madrasa and arrested the teacher at around 4:00 in the afternoon.
Abdul Mazid told this correspondent at the police station that he beat up Touhid as he was late at the class.
