Rain triggers floods in Gaibandha

Heavy rain for the last 4-5 days, followed by onrush of water from across the border, triggered flash flood in the district, leaving at least 5,000 people of two upazilas marooned. Low lying areas of Jamuna river basin in Shaghata and Phulcahhri upazilas have gone under knee-deep water, said an official of Water Development Board. The affected areas are Hatbari, Gobindi, Sathalia, Hasilkani, Patilbari, Nalsia, Gobindapur and Haldia in Saghata upazila, Galna, Nilkuthi, Bhajondanga, Baje Phulchhari, Pipulia, Gabgachi, Kholabari, Ziadanga, Khatiyamari, Kalasoner char, Kaiteer hat, Harichandi, Kabilpur and Rasoolpur in phulchhari upazila. Crops, including aman paddy and pulse, on 3000 acres of land went under water in Phulchhari. Sukkur Ali of village Golna in Phulchhari, said the floodwater damaged paddy on his three bighas of land. Seedlings of aman on my two bighas of land were washed away by the flood, said Amir Hossain of Baushi village in the same upazila. A number of lanes and by-lanes in the town were inundated by the rain water. The water also entered many houses, causing immense sufferings to the dwellers. In Lalmonirhat, at least 60,000 people of 70 villages in five upazilas remain marooned due to flash flood caused by heavy rain for the last one week, reports our correspondent. Low lying areas of Teesta and Dharla rivers basin in Hatibandha, Aditmari, Kaliganj, Patgram and Sadar upazilas have been affected, said WDB sources. Aman paddy on vast tracts of land in 14 unions of the upazilas went under water. The affected unions are Angarpota-Dahagram, Bawra, Kuchlibari of Patgram upazila, Bhotmari, Kakina of Kaliganj upazila, Goddimari, Sindurna, Dawabari, Patikapara, Saniyazan of Hatibandha upazila, Mohishkhocha of Aditmari upazila and Khuniyagachh, Rajpur and Mogolhat of Sadar upazila.
