10 hurt as Atghoria AL factions lock in clash during council
Two factions of Awami League Atghoria pourasava (municipality) unit under Pabna district clashed during council of the unit at Atghoria Pilot High School on Saturday night, leaving 10 people from both sides injured.
The clash ensued as the lawmaker of Pabna-4 constituency Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu, also the president of AL Pabna district unit, left the venue at around 8:00pm without declaring the committee of the pourasava unit.
Two leaders of the unit--Zahidul Islam and Md Mahfuzullah--were the candidates for the post of general secretary. Local AL sources said Shamsur Rahman Sarif Dilu supported Zahidul Islam while AL Atghoria upazila unit backed Md Mahfuzullah.
According to Atghoria upazila unit AL General Secretary Shahidul Islam Ratan, although the subject committee elected Mahfuzullah as general secretary of Atghoria municipality unit, the lawmaker did not declare the committee.
While Shamsur Rahman Sarif Dilu was leaving the venue under police escort, the supporters of Mahfuzullah waylaid his car and surrounded him, Ratan said, adding that additional police rushed to the spot and rescued the lawmaker. Later, the supporters of Mahfuzullah vandalised the council venue.
At around 8:30pm, Zahidul's men swooped on their rival party men, prompted them to retaliate. At least 10 people were injured during the clash. The injured received treatment at Atghoria Upazila Health Complex.
