Joint drive to rescue 38 kidnapped fishermen
The members of Bangladesh Coastguard of Mongla west zone and a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-6 have launched a joint drive in the Sundarbans yesterday to rescue the 38 fishermen kidnapped by forest robbers near Fairway Buoy of the Bay in Sharankhola upazila on Friday.
They launched the drive at Kotka and Kochikhali of Sundarbans east zone under Sharankhola upazila of the district and Shela and Hiron Point of Mongla.
Members of 'Sirsha Bahini', a notorious gang, kidnapped 38 fishermen along with three trawlers near Fairway Buoy of the Bay on Friday.
They also looted fishes, nets and other valuables worth Tk 20 lakh from 25 fishing trawlers in the area, leaving eight fishermen injured.
The gang demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom for release of each fishermen.
They also threatened to kill the fishermen if the demand was not met within seven days.
